Entries are based on published transcriptions and genealogy databases as well as the study of the original documents. Some originals are indistinct and hard to verify, and transcriptions and databases often differ. Researchers are advised to seek others sources such as birth, marriage and death certificates for more accurate interpretation.

This database can be sorted by a single column or multiple columns in sequence using the Excel Sort & Filter then Custom Sort commands.
The ages of individuals over 15 in the 1841 census are rounded down to the next multiple of 5 so a 34-year-old would be given as 30. Exceptions may be found where the exact age is given. Exact ages were difficult to gather as many individuals did not know them. Similarly the spelling of names could be inaccurate and could also vary between different households of related families.
The Household # refers to the entries in the original census return document which are organised dwellings with single or multiple households.
If an individual dwelling is not specified reference is made in the returns to either Ashprington village or one of the hamlets, such as Tuckenhay, Yetson or Washbourne.
All individuals with the same Household # were staying in that household on the night of the Census Return whether principal family members or members of other families such as servants or visitors. All members of a household are listed together in the Census Return, but in this database they are listed separately if they had different surnames. Users of this database can sort on Household # to collect together all individuals staying in the same dwellings.
The column headed M indicates in months the age of a child under 1 year old. The column headed B indicates if an individual was born in Devon.
